In late March this year, the Chinese government announced two sets of
counter-sanctions against several European academics and research
institutions in retaliation for the coordinated sanctions from the EU,
the UK, Canada and the US against four Chinese officials and one entity
in Xinjiang. Three of the speakers, Dr. Jerdén, Dr. Smith Finley and
Dr. Zenz, are among the academics who have been personally sanctioned
by the Chinese government. The Mercator Institute for Chinese Studies
(MERICS), where Dr. Ohlberg was previously employed, has been one of
the sanctioned institutions.

In the webinar “When Silence Is Not Golden”, the four speakers will
discuss and explain how the latest sanctions effect their work and what
consequences they experience and anticipate for their research. We will
discuss with the them and with the audience why and how the Chinese
government has been using sanctions, in particular the denial of visa
to researchers on China, as a “punishment” for many years.
