Vorlesung: Geschichte des chinesischen Kaiserreichs

Die Vorlesung schlägt einen großen Bogen von den mythischen Ursprüngen der chinesischen Kultur bis zum Sturz der Qing-Dynastie im Jahr 1912. Sie liefert einen Überblick über wesentliche politische, soziale und kulturelle Entwicklungen und zeigt Unterschiede und Konstanten im Vergleich zur Gegenwart auf.

Barefoot Doctors on the Move: Tracing a Concept and its Image Across Space

The term “barefoot doctor” (chijiao yisheng 赤脚医生) gained currency as a term and concept with Mao Zedong’s Directive in 1968, in which he insisted that medical work needed to be focused on the countryside. This involved great change for the health sector of the PRC that had previously been dominated by the strategies of the Health Ministry, which was run with the support of Soviet specialists, and which focused on fully-trained doctors in urban areas, aiming at developing higher expertise and specialization in their respective medical fields. With Mao’s Directive, doctors from urban medical establishments were increasingly “sent down” to the countryside to work in medical centers of the People’s Communes and train individuals in basic hygiene and primary medical care. Here they would offer classes for part-time health workers. The term barefoot implied that these newly-trained health workers would, ideally, also continue to work in the fields, which farmers did barefoot due to the flooded rice fields. Hence the term. By the early 70s, barefoot doctors added up to over one million and the basic health care coverage in rural areas increased drastically to finally cover up to 90%. The image of the barefoot doctor thus became key in visualizing the revolution of health care not only within the PRC during the Cultural Revolution, when it circulated in form of posters, but also globally. Images of the barefoot doctor as a symbol of support for and aid to Africa, for example, were key in creating a transcultural visual rhetoric of the Revolution. While in 1978 the “barefoot doctor” concept was viewed favorably by the World Health Organization (WHO), the term and practice would lose its recognition in the PRC after the Reform and Opening Period. This talk traces the history of the concept of rural health care in China and inquires how the image and concept of the barefoot doctor in particular moved beyond China. How did it travel? How was it received? And how did it shape how rural health care and community health workers are conceived in debates on Global Health today?

Emily Graf is a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of Chinese Studies at the Freie Universität Berlin. She received her PhD in 2018 in Sinology and Transcultural Studies from Heidelberg University. Her primary research focuses on author museums dedicated to Lu Xun in the PRC, Bertolt Brecht in the GDR and Lai He in Taiwan. Taking a global perspective, she investigated how each author is represented as a left-wing writer and revealed how “world literary heritage” is thereby constructed through the display of their literary estates. A Visiting-PhD Fellowship at Renmin University of China, Beijing (2013-14) enabled her to visit author museums across China and Taiwan, interviewing museum directors, staff and visitors. She has taught classes on the writers Lu Xun and Lai He, on the contemporary writer Yan Lianke, as well as on past and present cultural politics in the PRC. In her recent research, she approaches the visual and cultural history of “barefoot doctors” and its relation to the field of Global Health.

Workshop: Contemporary China Graduate Workshop 2019

Uni-Haus Schauinsland, November 1-3, 2019, Co-organized by the University of Freiburg and the University of Cologne. With support from the Confucius Institute and the Global South Studies Center Cologne.

The University of Freiburg Institute for Chinese Studies and the University of Cologne Institute of East Asian Studies will co-host the third annual Contemporary China Graduate Workshop in Schauinsland on November 1-3, 2019. The workshop will bring together participants from Europe and China to discuss contemporary China and its history since 1949 and offer master classes by senior researchers from Shanxi University and Fudan University.

Afu – Ein Deutscher als gefeierter Social Media Star in China

Können sich 7 Millionen chinesische Follower irren? Thomas Derksen ist als Afu ein Social Media Star in China. Zusammen mit seiner Frau Liping dreht er Video-Bloggs die auf sehr unterhaltsame Weise das Zusammenleben mit seiner chinesischen Frau und ihrer Familie thematisieren. Auch in seinem kürzlich erschienen Buch „Und täglich grüßt der Tigervater“ berichtet er sehr liebenswert von seinem Leben und Lieben im Fernen Osten, von kulturellen und kulinarischen Eigenheiten, von Missverständnissen und so mancherlei Aha-Erlebnissen.

Afu und Lipeng werden ihre Geschichten live auf die Bühne bringen. Untermalt wird das Video-Einspielungen und Passagen aus dem Buch. Dabei werden sie mit dem Publikum in Interaktion treten.

Ein echter Kracher für alle, die mehr über das wahre Leben in China erfahren wollen!

Thomas Derksen 阿福 in Gummersbach geboren, hat es während seiner Gymnasialzeit das erste Mal nach China verschlagen. Nach dem Abitur hat er aber erstmal etwas Vernünftiges gelernt und eine Ausbildung zum Bankkaufmann bei der örtlichen Sparkasse absolviert. Weil er aber keine Lust hatte, sein ganzes Leben lang Bausparverträge und Versicherungen zu verkaufen hat er im Anschluss daran an der Ruhr-Universität Bochum und an der Fudan-Universität Shanghai Wirtschaft und Politik Ostasiens sowie Chinesisch studiert. Seit 2016 lebt und arbeitet er als erfolgreicher Vlogger und Influencer mit seiner chinesischen Frau Liping in ihrer Heimat Shanghai.

Annual Workshop on Modernizing Rural China Took Place in Freiburg

The second annual workshop of the Modernizing Rural China Research Network took place in Freiburg, Germany from September 27th to September 29th 2019.

The second annual workshop of the Modernizing Rural China Research Network took place in Freiburg, Germany from September 27th to September 29th 2019.

Scholars from Europe, North America, and Asia convened at Studienhaus Wiesneck near Freiburg to discuss land use, agrarian change, urbanization and state-society relations in a modernizing Chinese countryside. This years workshop, organized by René Trappel, Elena Meyer-Clement, and Jesper Zeuthen, consisted of paper presentations and a final steering discussion to organize future work and plan upcoming events. A report on the workshop is forthcoming in ASIEN. 

Researchers interested in joining the Research Network are welcome to contact René Trappel.

The next workshop will take place in February of 2021.

China ist einer der wichtigsten Handelspartner Deutschlands, und damit natürlich auch Baden-Württem­bergs, auch für den chinesischen Außenhandel. Der Handels­krieg zwischen den USA und China hat einige Fronten verschoben - was kann das für Europa bedeuten?

Der Vortrag beleuchtet die aktuelle Wirtschaftslage in China, erläutert Chancen und Risiken und geht darauf ein, an welchen Stellen China die westliche Wirtschaft wohl bald einholen wird. Nach Jahrzehnten ausländischen Investments in China ändert sich die Richtung: Immer mehr chinesische Firmen investieren im Ausland. Sollte man sich dagegen wehren oder es eher begrüßen?

Bernhard Weber, MBA, ist Leiter der Baden-Württemberg Repräsentanz in China. Zuvor zählte er 20 Jahre zur Geschäftsleitung der BSH Haushaltsgeräte in China. 1994 begann seine berufliche China-Aktivität als Kaufmann einer Siemens JV in Nanjing, nachdem er schon in den 1980er Jahren im Rahmen seines Studiums als DAAD Stipendiat an der Shandong Universität in Jinan Chinesische Sprache und Geschichte studiert hatte. Neben seiner beruflichen Tätigkeit engagiert sich Weber auch bei der Europäischen Handelskammer in China (EUCCC), deren Nanjinger Chapter er seit 2016 leitet.

International Conference: Transitional Justice without Transition? Redressing Past Injustices under State Socialism

The Maoist Legacy will be hosting the international conference “Transitional Justice without Transition? Redressing Past Injustices under State Socialism” on February 21-23, 2019, at the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies. The conference will bring together scholars from around the world working on China, the Soviet Union, Romania, and North Korea. Soviet scholar Prof. Dr. Nanci Adler will deliver a keynote entitled: “The Future of the Soviet Past: Russia and the Challenge of the Age of Transitional Justice.”

The question of how states and societies cope with the legacy of past injustices has attracted enormous scholarly and political attention in the past three decades. The concept of “transitional justice,” denoting various types of judicial and non-judicial approaches to aid reconciliation and sentence perpetrators, is often used to frame corresponding research. While the Nuremberg and Tokyo trials are commonly cited as pioneering this approach, the “age of transitional justice” (Adler 2018) only began in the 1980s, when the global ascent of human rights discourses underpinned attempts to establish institutions and practices that could help overcome legacies of repression and dictatorship. Most studies invoking the concept of transitional justice therefore only trace transitions from dictatorship to democracy. Yet how are we to understand amnesties, rehabilitations of victims, administrative lustration, trials against perpetrators, and the politics of historical memory during non-democratic transformation processes? This conference will look at attempts at redressing injustices under state socialism. While the majority of the contributions are devoted to the People’s Republic of China, there will also be papers addressing the Soviet Union, Romania or even North Korea. By rethinking the politics of historical justice under Communist Party rule, the conference offers new perspectives about the functions that political-legal approaches serve in autocratic attempts to come to terms with a violent past.

Vortrag: "Watching China's Rise from the Academic Margins"

Few events have shaken the global political and economic order in the past two decades as the (re)emergence of China as a powerful actor on the world stage. While there has been ample discussion of the geostrategic implications of this rise, the question of whether this also implies the emergence of new paradigms of governance or rulership has received less attention. This talk will highlight some alternative political concepts that have either been coined in China or on China in the recent past, such as the notions of tianxia, the China model or the Chinese dream. By looking at the peculiar fusions of history, present and future in these concepts, the difficult role of Sinology as a discipline at the academic margins will also be reflected upon, especially now that its object of study, China, moves to the center of global attention.

The appearance of the Internet in China gave a huge boost to free expression by Chinese citizens, not only because it provided vast new sources of information but also because it offered platforms from which people could speak to the world, whether anonymously or not.  The Chinese regime, rightly perceiving a major challenge to the control of information it had long coveted, established effective systems of censoring the Internet and—even more effectively—of prescribing what should go onto the Internet in the first place.  Newspapers, magazines, and websites are regularly advised about which topics to stress and which to downplay, even to the detail of which page a news item should appear upon and what size characters should be used in its headline. 

Perry Link teaches and writes about modern Chinese language, literature, popular culture, and politics.  He is professor emeritus of East Asian Studies at Princeton University and is currently Chancellorial Chair for Teaching Across Disciplines at the University of California at Riverside.  His most recent single-authored book is An Anatomy of Chinese: Rhythm, Metaphor, Politics, and he is author, co-author, or editor of nineteen other books.  Two of these are widely-used Chinese language textbooks. He has written about popular Chinese fiction and the popular Chinese performing art called xiangsheng (“comedians’ dialogues"). He has translated the work of leading Chinese dissident writers including Liu Binyan, Fang Lizhi, and Liu Xiaobo, and serves on the boards of directors of several human rights organizations.  He writes and does interviews for the Western press and has been a regular contributor to The New York Review of Books. His current project is a biography of Liu Xiaobo, the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize winner who died in July, 2017 while serving an eleven-year prison sentence for "suspicion of subverting the state."
